Quick start: your first agent
In about 10 minutes you will create a voice agent that books appointments, try it in your browser, publish it and connect a phone number to it.
You need:
- A workspace role of Builder or higher to create, test and publish the agent, and Admin or higher to connect a phone number. See who can do what.
- A phone number in your workspace. No number yet? You can still do steps 1 to 3, then request a number.
1. Create the agent
Section titled “1. Create the agent”-
In the sidebar, open Agents, then click New agent.
-
Choose Start from a template.
-
Pick Appointment booking. It asks the caller for their name, a date and time, and optionally an email, then reads the details back before it saves them.
-
Enter a name, for example Sunrise Clinic front desk, and click Create and open.

1On the Agents page, click New agent.

2Choose Start from a template.

3Pick Appointment booking.

4Give the agent a name, then click Create and open.

5The agent builder opens. Each section on the left is one part of the agent.
The agent builder opens. Each section on the left is one part of the agent: its basic info, the prompt, the data it collects, its voice and more. Your changes save on their own.
2. Try it
Section titled “2. Try it”The template already has instructions, a greeting and the details to collect, so you can try it right away.
-
Open Prompt to see what the template wrote: the Instructions, the Greeting and the Closing line. Change anything you like.
-
In the Test panel on the right, open Chat and click Start chat. The agent greets you.
-
Type as the caller, for example Hi, I’d like to book a check-up for tomorrow morning, and send it. The agent answers as it would on a call.

1Prompt holds the instructions, the greeting and the closing line. The template filled them in.

2In the Test panel, open Chat.

3Click Start chat. The agent greets you.

4Type as the caller. The agent replies as it would on a call.
3. Publish
Section titled “3. Publish”Real calls never use the draft. They use a published version.
-
Click Publish at the top right.
-
Add a release note if you like, for example First version, from the template, then click Publish.

1When you're happy with it, click Publish.

2Add a release note if you like, then click Publish.

3Version 1 is published. It isn't live until a phone number points at it.
The header now shows Published v1 · not live until a number is connected. A version is frozen: you can keep editing the draft, and publish again to make version 2. Calls that are already running keep the version they started with.
Version 1 goes on both the test line and the live line, so a number has something to run. Later versions go on the test line first; when you’re happy, click Put v2 live (or the version you published) at the top. Read more in Drafts and versions.
4. Connect a phone number
Section titled “4. Connect a phone number”-
In the sidebar, open Numbers.
-
Open the ⋯ menu of a number and choose Change agent.
-
Under Agent, choose your agent. Under Which line, choose Test line. Click Save.
-
Call the number from your phone. Your agent answers.
-
When you’re happy with it, change the line to Live line, so real callers reach the agent.

1Go to Numbers. Open the actions menu of a number.

2Choose Change agent.

3Pick your agent and the Test line, then click Save.

4Call the number to talk to your agent. When it works, change the line to Live line for real callers.
The test line is for trying the agent yourself. The live line takes real callers. Calls to the number use the version on that line, from the next call. Draft changes never reach a number until you publish them.
Hear a test call
Section titled “Hear a test call”This is an agent made from the same Appointment booking template, in a test call with a simulated caller (an AI playing a patient). The agent asks for the details, reads them back, and books only after the caller says yes.
